With the slight upturn in the state of the Canadian/US economy companies need to adapt recruiting practices to the shifting economic times. The impact of the economic downturn resulted in a sluggish job market and now some companies are not adjusting practices fast enough to attract and retain talent.
What are the differences between hiring in a weak economy versus a
strong one?
In a weak economy, the talent pool is deep - applicants are in abundance and are typically over-qualified. In a strong economy, the talent pool quickly becomes shallow - companies bid on qualified candidates with multiple offers.
In order to attract talent, companies need to quickly adapt their hiring practices to each shift in the economy.
What companies need to do in a strong economy in order to attract talent:
- Move faster: companies with hiring and interview processes that move at glacial speed simply lose out on talent.
- Hit the market with your best sales pitch: talk about the company with an enthusiasm that would make a potential candidate want to work there.
- Offer an attractive package: candidates have the ability to shop around in a strong market, so standards in terms of pay and benefits need to be raised.

Testimonials
At Summit we are very proud of our relationships with both clients and candidates. Here are a few comments that we are pleased to share.
"This note is to let you know how pleased I have been with your recent service to fill our open headcount for Sales Consultant. In these economic times it is very important that recruiters understand the need to move quickly to fill openings with the right candidates. This is often difficult as having a sensitivity to the need to fill positions quickly, while at the same time finding the right fit can pose a challenge.
Your team has shown a
focus and diligence that I greatly appreciate and that has paid off in
the placement of a great addition to our team. Thanks for understanding
our unique profile, focusing on fit, and working hard to fulfill our
needs!"

"Summit, Tom
Rivers, understands our business and our culture and recruits for us on
that basis - never sending a candidate that wouldn't fit."
