Controller/Director of Finance – Professional Services

About Our Client: Our client is a well established and growing global company in the professional services space with 5 offices in Canada.

 

Position Scope: As the current Controller is retiring after 25 years, our client is seeking a Controller/Director of Finance, based out of their Toronto location. This role will report to the Chief Financial Officer.

We are looking for a candidate who can work with/support/mentor the existing accounting team (3) while assessing the skill sets required in a fast paced, multi-million dollar company. The candidate should have experience in a founder/owner operated company and should have an entrepreneurial mindset – a team player with a talent for challenging the status quo and coming up with new ideas to implement a more streamlined accounting system.

The candidate will have prior experience with full cycle accounting. The candidate must be hands on and willing to step into any of the roles within accounting to assist in completing tasks – including collections/supplier discussions/journal entries/intercompany accounts.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a changing and dynamic environment with the ability to pivot depending on the requirements of the CFO or Chairman.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee full cycle accounting, closing month end, financial reporting including collections and payroll.
  • Work with the International offices on any reporting requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly commission reports.
  • Oversee and support the year end audit.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets and forecasting; generation of reports of performance against budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare supporting documents for preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, including working with the auditors.
  • Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures.
  • Communicate financial metrics to senior management.
  • Ensure the trial balance is complete and accurate for financial reports.
  • Ensure intercompany accounts are up to date and balance.
  • Prepare, analyze and present monthly, quarterly and annual operating results for each company and department.
  • Delivery of the consolidated monthly reporting package, including a detailed analysis of variances to budget.
  • Provide analysis and support to operations as required.
  • Responsible for the accuracy and timelines of financial information.
  • Keeps up to date and provides support on any relevant regulations (payroll/WSIB/agency licenses/annual filing with lawyers).
  • Sales tax remittance/filing.
  • Corporate income tax remittance.
  • Review and approval of expenses.
  • Post monthly payroll journal entry.
  • Other related duties as required or assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced knowledge of Simply Accounting & Quick Books.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel (pivot tables, etc.)
  • Excellent analytical skills with an attention to detail.
  • University degree in a relevant field.
  • Bilingual (in French) would be considered an asset.
  • Accounting designation would be considered a strong asset.
  • 7+ years of full-cycle accounting experience.
  • Able to independently handle all accounting functions and period-end closing.
  • Detail oriented and focus on accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and team-oriented approach.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to take on new challenges.
  • Strong team player who can work autonomously but also willing to roll up sleeves and help team.
  • Strong organizational skills, able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • High level of integrity, with an ability to handle confidential information.
  • Must possess a keen sense of responsibility and a good sense of priorities while efficiently managing multiple tasks.
  • Must be flexible and able to put in the extra efforts when needed.

 

COVID Related:

  • As the Chairman/CFO and accounting team are in the office, must be comfortable being in the office during COVID.
  • The accounting team works in an open concept but the workstations are more than 6 feet apart – must be comfortable working within that environment.
