Health & Safety Manager – Electrical & Power Industry

The Health & Safety Manager will oversee and coordinate all functions related to the delivery of health, safety and environmental compliance and regulatory programs.  This position will take leadership in ensuring that safety is a priority by proactively managing risk, educating internal and external stakeholders, and enforcing policies, procedures and regulations across all business functions.  This role supports the business in revenue and profit delivery while operating within the standards of law and the company standards of excellence in safety.

  • Develop, implement and monitor corporate safety policies and procedures in compliance with company standards as well as government and industry regulations.
  • Provide leadership and support to all branches in the delivery of health, safety and environmental programs as well as any legislation changes that may impact the organization.
  • Create and maintain health and safety training programs and safe work methods.
  • Coordinate regular safety meetings with all employees to discuss tool box talks, issues and non-conformance.
  • Coach and mentor staff on health and safety program.
  • Ensure new hires are provided health and safety orientation and training, including the completion all required documentation.
  • Continuously conduct inspections and reviews of all branches and job sites, facilities and equipment; provide timely feedback and support to manage standards.
  • Manage safety boards with postings including, but not limited to: H&S policy, location of first aid, emergency evacuation route and hospital direction as well as key phone numbers.
  • Ensure all sites have the following material available; H&S policy, green book, etc.
  • Develop and implement Certificate of Recognition Program (COR) for the organization.
  • Responsible for the monitoring and completion of all Third-Party Contractor Compliance programs, including, but not limited to: ISNetworld, Ariba, Avetta, Browz, and Contract Check.
  • Manage incident investigations to determine root cause, and corrective actions where necessary are implemented and followed up.
  • Complete regular audits of subcontractor safety processes, loss control programs, and non-compliance issues; follow up with appropriate documentation and recommendations as needed.
  • Review and participate in the development of project safety plans for specific client needs.
  • Ensure all incidents are reported immediately.
  • Liaise with WSIB with respect to workplace incidents and back to work program planning. 
  • Monitor and follow up on workers placed in modified work programs.
  • Responsible for the establishment of, and monitors the performance of, workplace safety and health committees.
  • Prepare and provide on-going summary reports to senior management outlining company-wide HSE metrics, achievements and challenges.
  • Research and stay current with health and safety industry trends; identify opportunities to be innovative in program development and delivery.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proven ability in the execution of strong Field audit skills and methodologies.
  • Ability to understand and/or learn business principles related to Line of Business managers, field supervisors and field leads.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Code, applicable CSA standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act (Greenbook) and Ontario Traffic Manual (Book 7).
  • Expert knowledge in regional, provincial and national HSE regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Proven ability to coach, train and mentor to a variety of audiences (field services, senior management, and corporate staff).
  • This position will be required to travel between branches and support branch expansion within Canada.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends; readily accessible for emergency protocols.
  • This position will be required to visit construction and job sites as well as inspect equipment.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Studies or a related field is preferred. Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) is an asset.
  • Experience working within the electrical/mechanical industry is an asset.
  • National Construction Safety Officer is preferred.
  • Training in Electrical Safety Awareness, Utility Work Protection Code, Working at Heights, First-Aid/CPR, Confined Space, Asbestos Awareness, and Elevated Work Platform is an asset.
  • Must have a G class license.
