We are excited to partner with our client, Cermaq Canada, to assist them in filling the role of Area Manager, Operations based out of Tofino.

The Role

As the Area Manager, Operations, you will advance the vision by providing leadership, overall management and direction to all aspects of the repair, maintenance and contractor partnerships to the salmon production sites

Position: Full-time

Location: Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

Travel Requirements: Frequent regional travel required, some national

Number of Direct Reports: Up to 5

Number of Total Reports: 5

Customer Leadership

  • With an expert knowledge of the production cycle, be able to understand the importance of the production of premium quality fish from egg to plate to exceed customer satisfaction throughout the value chain
  • Lead the department through decisions that could impact service levels at a regional level yet are beneficial to the company wide operations while implementing and delivering on egg to plate process that minimizes risk to supply and maximizes profit
  • Direct the certification of production for continual improvement processes that provide Cermaq with world class certifications

Operational Leadership

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Production Sites and Repair & Maintenance department to lower or eliminate the short and long-term risk of infrastructure and assets that could effect salt water production
  • Uphold our corporate values through professionalism and organizational excellence
  • Works with Regional Production Manager to develop area production plans and operational needs
  • Collaborate with the Area Managers and Production Sites for a timely preparation for smolt entry to maximise survivability according to the established line plans
  • Coordinate with the internal and external service providers to ensure that the salt water sites have the resources required to meet production targets
  • Manage the Tofino yard to ensure the efficient movement of contractors and resources to minimize or eliminate any risk to saltwater production
  • Coordinate the delivery of supplier services in order to eliminate or minimize the risk to saltwater production
  • Contribute to the financial and capital budgetary plans with the Regional Production Manager
  • Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance program on equipment and infrastructure
  • Maintains accurate equipment and infrastructure inventories
  • Advises the Regional Production Manager on the maintenance progress and issues, advises formally and informally on a regular basis that reflects accurate and current information
  • Continually improves operations by seeking out innovations, bring forward new ideas and concepts that are in alignment with our strategic agendas
  • Contributes to the overall success of Cermaq Canada by ensuring Production Sites are operating optimally to meet or exceed established goals and targets

Sustainability Leadership

  • To describe the model of ‘Responsible Salmon for Life’
  • Direct the implementation and monitoring of the Cermaq Canada Management System that keeps to the corporate commitments
  • Operate the department in alignment with our sustainability principles and meets or exceeds both federal and provincial environmental regulations
  • Collaborate with Regional Production Manager and the Sustainable Development Department to maintain quality First Nations partnerships

People Leadership

  • Promotes compliance to all safety procedures to ensure the health and well-being of all persons in accordance with Leadership Principle #1
  • Promotes a positive workplace that treats all persons with respect and dignity devoid of discrimination, bullying and harassment
  • Collaborates with Management locally with a focus on customer service that keeps to the corporate commitments
  • Leads the department being mindful of the core values and leadership principles that guide all employees at Cermaq for example;
    • Leads the departments to ensure collaborative and efficient teamwork both internally and with other departments
    • Encourages the development of all direct reports to their maximum potential to ensure efficiency and engagement

    • Resolves complex problems that may require cross divisional support in such a manner that organizational goals and efficiency are maintained
    • In collaboration with Human Resources, makes recommendations and decisions concerning discipline for department employees that are fair and equitable
    • Establishes performance standards for all direct reports then evaluates and monitors progress in order to maximize the effectiveness of the department

Job Requirements

Education, Experience and Skills

  • University Degree in biological science or related field, preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a management role managing saltwater salmon production sites from smolt entry to harvest
  • Prior experience working with strategic budget & production goals
  • An aptitude for mechanical repair and troubleshooting, with timely delivery
  • Proven interpersonal and communications skills that drive team results
  • Capable of boat, car and plane travel
